Terms and Conditions

These terms apply to orders placed on this website. The site is run by byChapters™, a trading name of Bored Group Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 16396586). Our registered office is 167–169 Great Portland Street, 5th Floor, London W1W 5PF, United Kingdom, and our VAT registration number is GB 500 4730 42. You can contact us at hello@bychapters.co.uk or on 0333 015 6933.

Please read these terms before you order. By placing an order you agree to them. Nothing in them affects your legal rights as a consumer.

1. Our products

We sell DIY book nook kits and miniature house kits made by specialist manufacturers. We choose each kit and test-build it before it's listed; our own original byChapters designs are planned for 2027. Kits are supplied unassembled, with step-by-step instructions. Each kit's contents, size and build details are shown on its product page. Photos are there to help you choose, and small details, such as the colour of an accessory, can vary between production runs. Glue and batteries aren't included unless the product page says so.

We're not affiliated with any publisher, studio or brand. See our Brand Disclaimer.

2. Your order and our contract

When you place an order, you're offering to buy the products in your basket, and we'll email you to confirm we've received it. The contract between us starts when we email you to say your order has been dispatched (for a gift card, when we email the gift card).

We may cancel an order before it's dispatched, for example if a product is unavailable or was listed at the wrong price. If we do, we'll let you know and refund you in full.

3. Pre-orders

Some kits can be pre-ordered before they reach our warehouse. The product page shows the month we expect to dispatch them, and we take payment in full when you place your pre-order. If the expected dispatch month changes, we'll email you. You can cancel a pre-order for a full refund at any time before it's dispatched.

If your basket has both pre-order and in-stock kits, you can choose in your basket whether we send the in-stock kits straight away and the pre-order when it arrives, or hold everything and send it together. You only pay for delivery once.

4. Prices and payment

Prices are in pounds sterling and include UK VAT. If you're shopping from Ireland or an EU country, prices are shown in your local currency and include the VAT and import duty due in your country, so there's nothing extra to pay on delivery. Elsewhere in Europe, prices are shown in your local currency and any import duties are added at checkout or charged by your country when the parcel arrives. Any delivery charge is shown at checkout before you pay (see section 5). Payment is taken at checkout through Shopify's secure payment providers. Orders delivered to Ireland or the EU are processed through our international checkout partner, Global-e, which acts as the seller of record for those orders and whose terms of sale are shown at checkout; our delivery, returns and parts promises apply to those orders in full.

5. Delivery

  • We deliver to the UK, Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Ireland, all 27 EU countries and the rest of Europe (Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City, Gibraltar, the Faroe Islands, Åland and Moldova).
  • UK delivery is free on orders of £25 or more. Orders under £25 cost £2.99 to deliver. Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man pay UK prices.
  • Every UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man order is sent by Royal Mail Tracked 24. Orders to the rest of Europe are sent by Royal Mail International Tracked, or by DPD or UPS if you choose express delivery.
  • European delivery: standard tracked delivery costs £6.95 to Ireland, £7.95 to Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria and Denmark, £10.95 to other EU countries and £12.95 to the rest of Europe, and is free on orders of £100 or more. Express courier delivery is available from £16.95. Charges are shown in your local currency at checkout.
  • We dispatch Monday to Friday, except bank holidays. In-stock orders placed before 3pm on a working day are dispatched the same day; orders placed later are dispatched the next working day. Pre-orders are dispatched when the stock arrives.
  • Royal Mail aims to deliver Tracked 24 parcels the next day after dispatch (it delivers Monday to Saturday), and International Tracked parcels within 3–5 working days of dispatch in the EU and 5–7 working days elsewhere in Europe. Express courier delivery aims for 1–5 working days depending on the country. Delivery times are estimates, not guarantees.

Your order is our responsibility until it's delivered to you. Our Delivery Information page explains what to do if a parcel is late.

6. Your right to cancel

Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you can cancel your order for any reason within 14 days of the day after you receive it (if your order arrives in parts, the 14 days run from the day after you receive the last part). To cancel, message us through the contact form. You can use the model cancellation form on our Returns and Refunds page, but you don't have to. Please send the kit back within 14 days of telling us.

We'll refund the price you paid and the standard delivery charge within 14 days of receiving the kit back, or of you showing us that you've sent it, whichever is sooner. You pay the cost of sending it back (including any postage and customs charges on a return from outside the UK). If the kit has been handled more than was needed to inspect it, for example component bags opened or parts glued, we may reduce your refund to reflect the loss in value.

7. Our 60-day returns promise

As well as your legal right to cancel, you can return any unopened kit for a refund of the price you paid for it: tell us within 60 days of delivery, then post it back within 14 days of our reply. Unopened means the box is still sealed or, if it arrived without a seal, every component bag is still sealed and nothing has been removed. You pay the return postage. This promise is extra to your legal rights and doesn't replace or reduce them. Full details are on our Returns and Refunds page.

8. Faulty items, manufacturing issues and parts replaced free

Your legal rights

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, the products we sell must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality. If something is wrong with your order, your legal rights include:

  • within 30 days of delivery: a full refund;
  • after 30 days: a repair or replacement, and if that doesn't put it right, a refund or a price reduction;
  • up to six years after delivery (five in Scotland): a claim if a product didn't meet these standards.

We cover all postage for faulty, damaged or incorrect items. Nothing in this section limits your legal rights; the promises below are extra to them.

Parts replaced free

We'll send a replacement part free of charge, including postage anywhere we deliver, if a part:

  • is missing from your kit when it arrives;
  • is faulty or has a manufacturing defect, for example a mis-cut or mis-printed sheet, a warped panel, or an LED set that doesn't light with fresh batteries;
  • is incorrect, for example a part from a different kit, or the wrong size or print;
  • was damaged in normal delivery; or
  • breaks while you're building the kit for the first time, following the instructions.

There's no fixed time limit, and you don't need to send the kit back. Please tell us as soon as you reasonably can after you find the problem, ideally before you build past that step, so we can get the part to you quickly. Replacement parts are subject to availability: if we can't source a part, we'll offer an equivalent part, a replacement kit or a refund.

What parts replaced free doesn't cover

  • accidental damage after your build is finished, such as a knock or a fall;
  • damage caused by misuse, alterations, heat, damp, direct sunlight or cleaning products;
  • normal wear, fading or discolouration over time;
  • parts lost after the kit has been opened; and
  • batteries, which aren't included with our kits unless the product page says so.

In these cases we'll still help where we can, and supply parts at cost where they're available. This doesn't affect your legal rights if a product was faulty.

How to request a part

Message us in the chat or use our contact form (choose "Missing or damaged pieces") with:

  • your order number and the kit name;
  • the manual step, and the part reference (the letter or number on the sheet or in the manual's parts list) with the quantity; and
  • a photo of the manual page and, where there is one, of the damaged or incorrect part, or of the parcel if it arrived damaged.

Photos help us send the right part first time. We'll only ask for the evidence we reasonably need, and we reply within one working day. Parts we hold in UK stock are posted straight away; parts that come from the kit's maker usually take 5–7 working days. Full details are on our Missing or Damaged Parts page.

Whole kits that are faulty or not as described

If a problem affects the whole kit, you can choose replacement parts, a replacement kit or, within 30 days of delivery, a full refund. After 30 days your other rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 still apply. We cover the postage both ways. Changing your mind about a kit that isn't faulty is covered by section 7.

9. Gift cards

byChapters gift cards are digital. Once your order is paid we email the gift card to you, or to the person you choose on the date you choose. Gift cards can be used for purchases on bychapters.co.uk, including delivery charges, and any balance left over stays on the card for next time. They have no expiry date. They can't be exchanged for cash or used to buy another gift card. Please keep the code safe, because anyone with the code can spend the balance. If you lose the email, contact us with your order number and we'll resend it. You can cancel a gift card you've bought within 14 days of buying it for a full refund, as long as none of the balance has been used.

10. Age suitability and safety

Our kits are craft kits for adults, rated 14+. They contain small parts and aren't suitable for children under 3. Some steps involve craft knives or glue, so follow the instructions and supervise younger builders. The LED lights use small batteries: keep batteries away from children and pets.

11. Chapter Points

Chapter Points, our rewards programme, has its own terms, set out on our Chapter Points page.

12. Our responsibility for loss or damage

If we don't comply with these terms, we're responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking this contract or of our failing to use reasonable care and skill. We're not responsible for loss or damage that isn't foreseeable. Loss or damage is foreseeable if it was obvious that it would happen, or if both of us knew it might happen when the contract was made.

We supply our products for domestic and private use. If you use them for business purposes, we aren't responsible for any loss of profit, loss of business or loss of business opportunity.

We don't exclude or limit our responsibility where it would be unlawful to do so. This includes responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, for breach of your legal rights as a consumer, and for defective products under the Consumer Protection Act 1987.

We aren't responsible for delays or failures caused by events outside our reasonable control. If one affects your order, we'll let you know as soon as we can, and you can cancel for a full refund of anything you haven't received.

13. Your personal information

We use your personal information as described in our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy.

14. Questions and complaints

If anything goes wrong, or you're unhappy with our service, tell us through the contact form or the chat, or call us on 0333 015 6933, and we'll do our best to put it right. We reply within one working day.

15. Other important terms

  • We may update these terms from time to time. The terms that apply to your order are the ones shown here when you placed it.
  • If a court decides that any part of these terms is unlawful, the rest still applies.
  • These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and you can bring legal proceedings in the English courts. If you live in Scotland, you can also bring them in the Scottish courts; if you live in Northern Ireland, in the Northern Irish courts.
  • If you live outside the UK, you keep any protection given to you by the mandatory consumer laws of the country where you live. If you live in Ireland or another EU country, this includes your 14-day right of withdrawal under the EU Consumer Rights Directive, which works in the same way as section 6.
