Lamplight on old walnut, a fire that never goes out, and every book already read.

Behind a carved balustrade, a panelled study: two oxblood armchairs drawn up to a marble fireplace, a pendant lamp hanging from the ribbed glass roof, and walnut shelves packed with mismatched spines. A brass ewer, an oil lantern and a gramophone share the corners with framed landscapes, a small sunflower still life and plants spilling from white urns.

The 248 pieces go together in layers: floor and skirting, then the shelf runs, the fireplace and the curved ribs that give the room its conservatory feel. Papering the tiled wall and hiding the LED wire behind the panelling are the fiddly, satisfying parts. Switch on, and the fire and lamp turn the whole study amber. Three to four hours of quiet work.

For anyone who likes old libraries, warm lamplight and slow, absorbing handwork. Rated intermediate, it's a fair first room for a patient builder, and a better gift than another gadget.

How many pieces are in the Left Bank Study kit?

248 pre-cut pieces, plus printed papers, miniature furniture and an LED light set, with step-by-step instructions in a full-colour manual.

How long does it take to build?

Most people finish it in 3–4 hours at an unhurried pace. We rate it intermediate: fine for a careful first-timer with steady hands.

How big is it when finished?

About 21.2 × 16.2 × 17.2 cm (width × depth × height). It stands upright between the books on a shelf, like a hardback.

Does it light up, and are batteries included?

Yes: Warm-white LED flower lamp, touch switch. Batteries aren't included, so have some ready for the moment you finish.

What else do I need to build it?

Batteries for the LED light, which aren't in the box. You'll also need craft glue, which isn't in the box. In the box: tweezers and a frosted sanding rod, and the illustrated manual. A craft knife or fine sandpaper helps tidy edges.

Who is it suitable for?

An adult hobby kit, rated 14+ for small parts. It suits readers, miniature makers and anyone who wants a calm, screen-free project, or a gift that lasts longer than the evening it's opened.
